I was going to upstart my beauty column with a summer skincare series today, but yesterday I had experienced something that takes precedence in sharing this space for a beauty post. During what was supposed to be a relaxing shower, I felt nothing but contempt and betrayal by something I’ve loved; that deceitful come down after an eager build up of excitement and thrill from the anticipated reunion with your long lost childhood friend. No, it was no real friend or person that caused such emotional treachery (well, not technically, but there are people indirectly responsible). It was the bottle of classic Herbal Essences shampoo I had bought the day before, in my hands, with its back turned to me, and the word Sodium Laureth Sulfate glowing red from deception. How could that possibly exist in its ingredients list after countless advertising stated that their revival of the lovable classic HE shampoos and conditioners would be free of sulfates and silicones?

The shampoo is stamped with 0% silicone on the front and sodium laureth sulfate remains the second listed ingredient on the back. The conditioner is stamped with 0% sulfates and plenty of -cones are on its list. Neither one or the other are both silicone and sulfate free. Looks like we’d still be massaging equal parts of silicone and sulfates into our precious hair anyway.

Some of you are thinking, wtf’s the big deal? It’s an ingredient. My deal is that they’ve tried to dupe us - their fans, their loyal customers, me being one of them, and I’m calling it. The disappointment I’ve faced, when I’ve looked forward to using what I thought was a great product made even better, only to be left stranded, cringing at the fact that they’ve resulted to tricking me into buying their claims, is enough for me to proactively share this story with you all. Misleading marketing is not only frustrating and disdainful, but it’s also perpetual and the only way we can help ourselves is to educate ourselves and not be the ignorant chumps major companies like P&G, who owns Herbal Essences, take us to be. Our time, money, and loyalty are put out there, but not to be taken advantage of. Seeing someone botch the craft of great marketing with a tactless, deceitful ploy like this from Herbal Essences is like finding out that Ryan Gosling’s abs were actually airbrushed in Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Quick lesson on sulfates and silicones, if you aren’t aware already: sulfates are chemical cleaning agents found in shampoos and soap that are only responsible for lathering. They strip your hair of all oils which is why you feel squeaky clean afterwards, but more often than not, your hair will overproduce oils to replace the natural oils it needs. You’re left with greasy, flat hair a day later, and dry, dull hair in the long run. You especially don’t want sulfates if you color your hair. Silicones coat and seal your hair to make it sleek and smooth, and they stay there. They build up until your hair becomes dull, flat, and “immune” to hair products since nothing actually penetrates your hair strand. Also, the hidden trap door of HE’s advertising is that sulfates are often only found in shampoos, while silicones are often only found in conditioners. Which is exactly why Herbal Essences can easily claim that their shampoo is silicone-free and their conditioner is sulfate-free. See what they did there?

Herbal Essences, please don’t pull at our heart strings, dangle those throwback, parental-advisory commercials, and tease our enthusiasm for one of the greatest childhood-slash-90s hits to come back and invigorate our showers. Don’t do that and falsely cater to our modern expectations of hair care with the intent to fool us, because we are smarter than you think. We were all rooting for you, HE. I’m sure if you didn’t claim it to be sulfate-free when it isn’t, millions of fans would’ve still been happy with their purchase. Instead you’ve found yourself losing the ones who can’t stand bullshit when they see it.

Happy Tuesday everyone! I hope you’re having the best start to the week. It’s been a while since I’ve been on a productivity streak but I have been banging out my to-dos like clockwork. If I was this productive everyday, as I was saying to Kyle, I’d probably be in a different place, but I always found so much joy in the smell of roses. So I strive to balance work and life, because ultimately, what will I remember, that I worked so hard for material goals or the sunny days I spent on the beach with loved ones?

I ran errands all over town yesterday so to stay comfortable, yet cute I put on this striped dress from Lulu*s. Its soft, body-hugging form, comforting sleeves, and casual stripes make it an easy piece to wear. I usually don’t go for striped dresses, but this particular dress’ striping on the skirt offers a slimming and contrasting dimension rather than just straight, horizontal stripes that tend to be widening. And yes, I ran errands in 4 inch heels, but I swear, these Shoemint heels are somehow so comfortable. They’ve become my coveted versatile nude heels for the Summer. I’m totally rejoicing in the pleasant cool-down so I can get more wear out of this elegant, spring-time Jill Stuart coat; the marigold nearly matches anything and adds a spring-y dimension to all looks. I wore this non-stop during my trip to SF last month and during most cooler nights of early Spring, so I’ve probably been exasperatedly labeled as this girl wearing freakin yellow everyday. But I can’t help it when I’m obsessed! I also have this shift dress from Sugarlips on constant rotation because of its ease, flattering shape, and vivid color. And what goes with color? Yup, more color.

One fact about myself: I’m a total 90s chick. I’m obsessed with 90s supermodels, fashion, music, and its cool, laidback, and dgaf vibes. So the inspiration for today’s look with this digitally-printed floral short suit comes from the epic Versace campaigns of the 90s. They are so eclectic and full of vibrancy, color, and most of all fun. So I piled on the heavy gold and made sure everything was colored, like my Nine West heels and bustier top. I love the idea of short suits, as it’s a perfect blend of looking tailored and cool for the hot summer, especially when they come in matching dynamic prints. It’s chic enough for the office (well, business casual office) and versatile enough for the night. I’m always looking to add more day-to-night looks into my wardrobe and the short suit is an exemplary style, highly recommend giving them a try!

Thank you rain and cold for going away so I can actually dress up again. There’s something about the cold that eliminates all styling prowess and assumes jeans and sweater are the way to go. I’m terrible at dressing for the cold; I have no idea how to layer or look remotely cute trying (thankfully there are plenty of ladies on the blogosphere for constant inspiration, see Kristen and Jenny). When you look back at my winter looks, I pretty much dress for a wishful warmer climate and pay for it dearly with chattering teeth. The sunshine and warmth are my element; I love sitting in the sun and feeling toasty at any moment, or even sitting in the car for a few minutes when it’s all hot and oven-baked inside. Keep my room at 76 degrees and I’m in bliss.

I love this eccentric printed dress from Sway, one of my favorite brick-and-mortar boutiques I used to frequent weekly back in college. I pulled out my big, floppy hat to give the dress a more feminine, casual look that’s ready for a garden party instead of a crazy music festival (been there, done that). I also found my new favorite summer booties from Lulu*s - the long pointed toe adds extra retro chic. I’ve been wearing this dress often because it’s so easy to throw on and not worry about the rest. The middle lace up adds enough detail to the look to make it interesting and the print is just summer-worthy. What’s one of your staple dresses?

brewery art walk

A couple weekends ago, Kyle and I visited the Brewery Art Walk, housed in an abandoned brewery that has since turned into a grand hub of studios and envious artist lofts. It was my first Art Walk in LA, so it was a super fun experience seeing the weird, the cool, and the trippy, like this 3D walk-through pictured above. The paint was made for 3D so with 3D glasses, you’re literally walking in a whole new dimension of fantasy land. And yes, it’s totally made for people who are on something.

It was blazing hot that day so I kept it light with a Gypsy Junkies silk babydoll, while keeping it PG-13 with a lace bralette and my favorite lace shorts underneath. Everything was sheer on sheer, so for a little extra coverage I threw on this floral kimono from 2b, which blended in a nice mix of print and color to my monotone outfit. Don’t be afraid to step out in sheers during the daytime! Be as comfortably covered as you need to be and remember to have fun with it and feel sexy and great.

I’d totally do this Brewery Art Walk again and again. Any favorite art walks in LA to suggest??

It’s a throwback Thursday! I have to give an ode to one of my old friends, a longstanding spot of shopping with gal pals while gossiping and finding the cutest things, Aldo. So this BCBG lace bralette and skirt was my first outfit at Coachella, sans jacket because of the ridiculous but expected desert heat. I didn’t document it at the time, but I knew I’d be wearing this many times over for the summer to come. The lace skirt is a great throw-on piece for the season; it’s complete with a classic, preppy A-line shape updated with a simple pleats and a high waist for a sweet but grown-up look. BCBG did it right with creating a matching lace bralette with a flattering sweetheart neckline. I chose to mix the colors (it came in coordinating white on white or black on black) because the contrast caught my eye. Broke a fashion rule of pairing brown with black (hate fashion rules, they should be nonexistent!) with my suede blazer jacket thing to tone down the skin and enhance the neutral textures.

I also must add that one of my favorite looks or trends is a high waist paired with a crop top or bralette - it’s super fun and flirty and I love that the high waist only shows the part of your stomach that always stays in good shape. It’s another fantastic illusory trend that will work for anyone!

You may not yet know about my obsession with The Reformation, but just know that it’s there. Check out this sustainable, eco-friendly brand that repurposes vintage and surplus materials to create killer chic clothes. Their dresses are to die for and I can boldly say that their dresses perfectly speak my ideal style. I found an all black Fauna Dress from their sample sale last week (which you can see in my instagram post), that I fell head over heels in love with. The dress accentuates your curves in all the right places and makes you look and feel amazing with no work. True effortless design. On the UO site, I found this floral Fauna dress as part of their Reformed collection (sounds like an spin-off for a more affordable price point) and I bought my second Fauna instantly. I say get yours and you will have no regrets, ever.

I pulled out an old, recurring summer staple from my closet - my chambray Motel romper, one of few pieces that I know will last in my wardrobe for years to come. I love it for its relaxed, retro fit, its light wash, and its ease of style. I paired it with other classics, like this heritage floral printed backpack and of course, some Vans sneakers. The paint splatter print on the Vans is such a fun and fresh compliment to the look and I love these shoes for its comfort. I can’t wait for SoCal to get out of this cold funk so I can pack a blankie and some food and beer and picnic on the grass under the sun. Looking forward to this perfect summer day on which this outfit will definitely be worn.

I had wished for better weather this past weekend to show off my Ella Moss vintage-inspired bikini from SwimSpot, but alas the clouds rolled on in and stayed by the time I could get out to the sand. No bother, I love dressing up a good bikini top for daytime strolling. My favorite street swimwear look is pairing a bikini top with high waisted shorts or skirt and an opened button down shirt (or jacket in my case because it was chilly). It’s cute without overtly showing skin. I adore this bikini because of its colorful, retro floral print and style, so it only made sense to go for an entire vintage-inspired look. This thrifted Levi’s jacket is one of my most favorite finds ever, especially after always wanting a classic, heritage denim jacket. This past Saturday, I was in Newport Beach for a friend’s birthday and I regrettably forgot my varsity jacket in the car as we headed out in the late afternoon. Kyle took me across the street from the bar to Newport Crossroads and scoured each rack for jackets or sweaters. No after no to everything found in the women’s section so I headed to the men’s, much to Kyle’s surprise. I honestly love the simple cuts of men’s jackets and the slouched look it has on a women’s frame like mine. And there I found this Levi’s, the last on the rack, and in a small. It’s probably the best purchase I’ve ever done on a whim and in a time crunch and after some of my last hopes of staying warm had gone. Thanks to Crossroads for being awesome!

Raising my glass to the most amazing and fun swimsuit I’ve ever worn! It’s not all that extravagant or frilly or fancy - it’s just the sexy high leg cut, the cool lattice back, and the daring puma print that radiated a fun, fierce spirit. I took it to all levels of becoming a cat for my second day at Coachella because of this raging puma suit from the undoubtedly cool brand, Beach Riot. I have so many thanks to Lulu*s for introducing me to this swimwear brand based out of Newport Beach (yeah OC!). People complimented this swimsuit all day, so Beach Riot is doing something totally right.

I wore it first thing in the morning as I dipped into the pool and laid out before the day’s wild festivities. I pulled on some True Religion cutoffs before heading out and realized the puma suit acts as an awesome bodysuit that I’ll definitely be rocking all summer. First stop was the True Religion x Flaunt Magazine brunch, which was intimate and set at a beautiful house in Palm Springs. Kyle and I fueled for the day on their amazing omelettes and mimosas and we headed out to the H&M party at the grandiose Merv Griffin Estate, complete with polo fields and a lake with paddleboating. Props to Santigold for an electrifying performance with her two dancers in the seemingly 100 degree heat. I definitely had to take a couple heat breaks in the large atrium filled with lounge beds (not complaining). For our last stop, we decided to meet with my bestie Chanelle at the Rhonda party at the Saguaro, which was the perfectly wild end to the day.

Would I do Coachella again? YES. Was I tempted to go back for weekend 2? Hell yeah. But I already had the best time last weekend, so I’m content on the great memories made with friends. For those going to Coachella this weekend, HAVE A BLAST!

The floral print of this Lulu*s dress is like an “oil cloth of a Hawaiian grandmother dipped in a soft hip,” as told by Gill when I sought a fair and honest appraisal of my appearance from The Bumbys at the Guess x Coachella pool party. I can’t imagine the dress could’ve been described more poetically. The cheery floral print really is unique and wonderful, delicate and soft; the perfect Spring print to cover a mod shift dress that can be worn for dazzling garden parties and elegant soirees. The only thing I need now is a big floppy hat and I’m off to polo fields.

desert oasis

This is one of the first Lulu*s outfits I wore poolside in our adorable and fun little desert oasis. I chose these Lavand pants for its bold, tropical floral print that look like it was pulled straight from a desert paradise and a cute little bandeau top with a unique, chiffon bow to bring out the reds in the floral print.
